We've been out diving for several days now and have had the chance to see all of the sites. We are so excited to report that the reefs were unaffected by the cyclone. The reefs look lush, vibrant and teeming with fish as usual. The weather is wonderful, the seas are calm and clear and our divers are very happy!

Bula vinaka from Garden Island Resort,
As most of you have heard by now a Category 4 cyclone passed through Fiji earlier this week and directly over the northern islands and Taveuni.  Due to communication lines being down, it has been a couple of days before contact could be made with the resort. Finally today we received a full report from our manager Mark Pedruco on the status of Garden Island Resort and the immediate surrounding area. We are both relieved and happy to report that our in-house guests and staff are all safe and there were no injuries due to the cyclone.
Although we have not had a chance to venture too far outside the grounds, we are unaware of any injuries in our neighboring resorts or villages at this stage. Mark says "our staff did an outstanding job preparing the resort for the cyclone and ensuring that our guests were comfortable and safe."  After Garden Island Resort was newly renovated, additional work was required in order to retrofit the buildings to withstand tropical storms and cyclones. As a consequence, we are pleased to report that the resort, restaurant, bar and dive center sustained no structural damage. Most of the island suffered downed trees and a lot of debris so the Garden Island staff is now busy cleaning up the resort grounds. "We are fully operational with guests still in-house and will have the resort grounds cleaned up within a couple of days.  The sun is shining, the seas are clearing and diving will commence as well. The resort is not closing and we are looking forward to welcoming our next guest's arrival."
Although we are relieved that Garden Island held up so well, we are sad to report that many of the less structured homes in Taveuni villages have been damaged. Garden Island is doing whatever they can to assist and will have more to report on assistance efforts soon. With communication lines currently down on Taveuni, we will be posting frequent updates on our website.
Please visit http://www.gardenislandresort.com/news/ for any new updates. We are also keeping in close contact with Aqua-Trek USA, who will be assisting us with communicating to our travel partners. Aqua-Trek can be reached at 1-800-541-4334.We would like to thank our travel partners for their concern during this time, and their understanding and loyalty. As always, Garden Island Resort and its family (staff) look forward to giving your clients a beautiful and memorable Fiji experience.

All our best,

Philip and Eileen Morais
